Above all else, there is one thing that you need to look for when you decide to get an education on the internet. This is the accreditation of any schools that you are thinking of studying with. If you want to be able to expand your education at a later date, you will want to make sure that you only obtain online accredited degrees. Any degree that is obtained from an educational institution that is not accredited could later prove to be a total waste of your money.

What Is Accreditation?

Accreditation is a kind of certification that is applied to educational institutions by bodies who specialize in analyzing and assessing these schools. Basically, the accrediting bodies determine the quality of education that the institutions are providing to their students.

This means that, when you’re looking at a school that offers online accredited degrees, you know that someone has taken a hard and critical look at their program and determined that the methods and the material that they are teaching are up to the standards that are considered to educate a person enough to qualify for the degree a student earns after completion of the program.

What’s Wrong With Getting a Degree from an Online School That Isn’t Accredited?

Stick to online accredited degrees. Schools that aren’t accredited by any kind of body can be referred to as a diploma mill. This basically means that they don’t teach anything, or not nearly enough, in order to provide their students with the acquired certifications and degrees.

Believe it or not, claiming that you have a B.A. when it was awarded from a diploma mill is actually illegal in several states and even punishable by time in jail as well as the incurrence of huge fines. This is just one of the reasons to make sure that any program you are thinking about enrolling in is strongly accredited.

Are There Different Types Of Accreditation?

You bet. First of all, there are accrediting bodies that are federal in nature and look at schools all across the country. Then there are regional accreditation bodies which will certify local schools. A school that is ONLY locally accredited might issue a degree that will get you a job in your area, but might not be as useful once you move to another area.

There are also online accredited degrees that have been accredited by bodies which specialize in industry specific accreditation, such as law, nursing, or education. These can be very important if you plan on working directly in the field of your education after you have graduated from the program.
